Braille Bricks and four other finds

Five Finds is a monthly collection of five inspiring things we deemed worthy of sharing. If you’d like inspiration in your inbox each month sign up here.

How much hot chocolate is too much hot chocolate?

And just like that we’re in October. In the UK the days are getting shorter, (the early morning runs are getting harder) and the hot chocolate is being consumed at an alarming rate. This edition of Five finds is a mixed bag of stories, inventions and smart products. If you’re new, welcome! There’s an archive of past editions here and if you like what you read please pass it on to someone you think will like it too.

There’s a little treat from the studio this month too. We’ve added a shop to the Lark website. The plan is to build a curated collection of products designed in the studio using sustainably sourced materials and environmentally friendly production methods. It’s an opportunity to let loose and create some fun stuff. We’re kicking off the collection with a Halloween special. Go take a look!

Do a Dudel

Dudel is a fun little drawing app that helps unlock your imagination. Take a simple shape, flip and rotate it until it looks like the start of something, then scribble on top to build your creation.

What’s your story?

The Strangers Project was started by Brandon Doman in 2009 to celebrate the stories all around us as well as the stories we carry with us. Over the years he has collected 85k handwritten stories from strangers, shared from all ages and all walks of life.

The Skarper unit is a device that can turn any bike into an eBike without having to make any modifications to the wheel or frame. Just clip it on and get going. Smart!

Braille Bricks

The LEGO foundation have adapted the iconic studs on their bricks to create a play-based methodology that teaches braille to children who are blind or have a visual impairment. Smart!

Straw sculptures

Around the rice harvest in Japan, art students repurpose the crop’s leftover straw (wara), into huge sculptures for the Wara Art Festival. This year’s festival is themed Echigo no Umi, or Sea of Echigo.
