Better late and four other finds

Five Finds is a monthly collection of five inspiring things we deemed worthy of sharing. If you’d like inspiration in your inbox each month sign up here.

This month’s Five Finds features tiny insects, a selection of printers, some mind-bending art and views from a bridge. It’s an eclectic mix as ever but hope you enjoy.

In the studio we’ve recently made some updates to the Yarn website with some more punctuation-based icons for their JoJo Maman Bébé case study. Go take a look.

Wishing you all a superb September!

Pint-sized press

This ultra-portable, 3D printed printing press can be used for etchings, woodcuts, linocuts and more. It was created by Martin Schneider to make printmaking more accessible. Check out the Kickstarter campaign for more details and you too could add your work to the Open Print Exchange.

A uniquely designed narrowboat, "The Looping Boat," featuring a large, circular loop structure, floats on the Sheffield & Tinsley Canal. The boat is painted in green, red, black, and white, and is docked near lush green trees.

The Looping Boat

I’m in love with Alex Chinneck’s new work on the Sheffield & Tinsley Canal. The entirely steel installation celebrates Sheffield’s industrial heritage and historic waterways. Watch the ‘making of’ film and if you don’t know his work there is loads more here and it’s all brilliant.

A cartoon-style ladybug with large, expressive eyes is captured mid-flight against a blurred green background. Its orange wing casings with black spots are open, revealing translucent wings.

Better late than never

I watched this short film with my son last week and was touched by its charming and poignant beauty. Released in 2019, it’s the story of a young ladybird who is trapped in a parcel then shipped to the Caribbean. Think Finding Nemo but with no dialogue. It’s available to stream on Prime Video at the moment too.

Moving receipts

More printing and this time it moves. Devised by the Co-op‘s creative agency VCCP London and created by Girl&Bear and Sam Gainsborough, the promotional advert is entirely created using receipt printers and stop-frame animation.

A grid of nine cropped images shows different people holding bright orange rotary phones to their ears outdoors. The individuals appear to be in various settings and are engaged in conversation.

Sometimes the best ideas start with a pun. A person on a bridge picks up a bright red phone and shares their view with the world. Via The Happy Newspaper.

Yarn website updates

Yeah baby!

We continue to work with our talented friend Sophie at Yarn and have recently updated her website to include her amazing case study for baby boutique JoJo Maman Bébé. Can we create a punctuation-based icon that looks like a baby? Yeah we can…
